- Ice builds up at the eave. More meltwater arrives, hits the ice, refreezes, and the dam grows.
- Eventually the dam is tall enough to pond water behind it. Ponded water finds nail holes, joints in the roof deck, and any imperfection in the underlayment — and enters the attic. From there it soaks insulation, drips onto drywall, and shows up as a ceiling stain.

What actually prevents ice dams (the boring, effective stuff)
The prevention hierarchy, in order of effectiveness:
- Air sealing the attic floor. Every hole through the ceiling from the living space to the attic — around can lights, plumbing stacks, HVAC boots, wiring, the attic hatch — needs to be sealed with fire-rated caulk or foam. This is the single highest-impact intervention. Typical cost for a Main Line home: $800–$2,500 professional, $50–$150 DIY if you are handy and have a weekend.
- Insulation depth to modern spec. Pennsylvania building code minimum is R-38, which is roughly 12–14 inches of blown cellulose or fiberglass. Most Main Line homes built before 2000 have R-19 to R-30. Topping up to R-49 (about 16 inches) is the modern retrofit standard. - Ice-and-water shield alone. The rubberized membrane installed under shingles at the eaves is required by modern code, and it prevents water from entering the house even if it does back up behind an ice dam. It does not prevent the dam and does not prevent damage to the roof structure, gutters, or fascia. Good insurance policy, not a solution.
- Chemical de-icers dropped on the dam.
